The Community Food Advisor Program in Ontario
provides, through trained volunteers, reliable information and education that promotes safe and nutritious food selection, preparation and storage practices to consumers in Ontario.
Through this volunteer peer education program, people in communities who have a love of food, and some knowledge and skills in food handling, are provided with technical and leadership training. Upon successful completion of their training, the volunteer peer educators become certified as Community Food Advisors and work in their community to improve and promote safe and healthy food selection, preparation, and storage practices.
In 2010, there were over 350 Community Food Advisors in 16 areas of Ontario. Download a list of current sites [PDF]. We invite you to read the latest issue of our newsletter, The Advisor (June 2011) to discover some of the work that CFAs do.
The Community Food Advisor Program was developed in 1992 by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and co-funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health. In 2001, the Community Food Advisor program was transferred to the Nutrition Resource Centre at the Ontario Public Health Association. The Nutrition Resource Centre provides the provincial coordination and administration for the program. The program is provincially funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport.
